Spare Parts Puppet Theatre is set to delight audiences once again with their cardboard, paper and clay version of the true story of Hachikō, the loyal Japanese dog who waited day after day at the train station for nine years for his owner to return.

First developed for inclusion in the 2012 AWESOME Arts Festival, Hachikō toured Australia through to 2104 and was again brought back for another season in Fremantle in 2016, garnering wonderful reviews along the way.

Spare Parts is bringing Hachikō back to their Fremantle stage on Chuuken Hachiko Matsuri, or Hachikō Day, April 8 until the 22nd and they also want to hear from you!

“Do you have a story of an extraordinary animal to share? We want to hear it! You could win a double pass to Spare Parts in celebration of Hachiko Day April 8. Click here for more information.”

In addition to Hachikō, you can also celebrate World Puppetry Day with Spare Parts on Tuesday, March 21. They’ll be going live on Facebook from rehearsals with updates from the cast, activities and competitions, so be sure to stay connected for all the fun.

Spare Parts Artistic Director Phillip Mitchell says, “For over ten thousand years, we have utilised puppetry to tell some of our most important and vivid ideas, beliefs and stories. And we are still doing so. From the awesome construction of The Giants to the simple papercraft of our own Hachikō, puppetry is many things. Above all, it is what you want it to be, what you imagine – and that’s where the true magic begins. Have a very magical World Puppetry Day.”

Here’s a short video about Hachikō by Spare Parts:

Performed at Spare Parts’ home theatre in Fremantle, Hachikō runs from April 8 to 22, Monday to Saturday 10am and 1pm daily (excluding Easter public holidays), with a special evening performance on Wednesday April 12 at 6.30pm. Book online 24/7 at or by calling 08 9335 5044.
