The Blue Room Theatre is on a roll starting its 2025 main season, with two sellout shows and a third one that’s well on its way to following suit: OUT OF ORDER by Tamara Creasey. If you’re in need of a break from the daily grind, then look no further than this madcap office comedy that delivers non-stop nuttiness and supreme silliness.
A team of five of Boorloo’s finest comic actor-improvisers turn a quest for morning coffee into an absolute riot. Written by Creasey, who performs alongside Daniel Buckle, Georgia McGivern, Tristan McInnes, and Alicia Osyka, OUT OF ORDER brings these five kooks together to make a perfect brew. The comedy is as broad as it gets, but is never vulgar or distasteful, and if there are cliches (a necessity in comedy), Creasey and the team are well aware of them and do their best to dispatch them in fresh and novel ways.
They must be absolutely knackered at the end of the show with all the lightning-fast dialogue and Scooby-Dooing around they manage with impressive precision. So often comedies of a heavily physical nature can become an onslaught of out-shouting and out-mugging one another, but this team avoids that pitfall with plenty of variety in character, pace, and intensity. Surely this is down to not only Creasey’s excellent script but also to director Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd‘s bold choices and the cast’s instincts and universal skill.
The lights (Adelaide Harney) and sound (Amaru Zachariassen) go a long way to ratcheting up the hijinks, sending everyone on stage into a hilarious frenzy when they’re activated (alarms, sirens, flashing lights, etc.). It seemed like every cue went off without a hitch, but these veteran improvisers might also have been able to cover any flubs or delays without us knowing. Even so, each player stuck to the pre-ordained plan while finding little bits that were all their own, giving each scene a level of spontaneity and ad lib inventiveness.
And with that, 2025 brings another original, independent show that I would gladly see twice. I can’t think of anything better than to spend an hour laughing to the point of tears again.
