REVIEW: The Red Balloon | Black Swan State Theatre Company

The Red Balloon by Albert Lamorisse, adapted by Hilary Bell, presented by Black Swan State Theatre Company The Studio Underground, 10 October, 2015 Sometimes the one thing that affects me most about a theatre production is the set design. A beautiful, functional, clever set design is a wonder of creativity, ingenuity and craftsmanship, not to mention teamwork, so I feel it’s justifiable to say that this is the best thing about a show, the thing I enjoy the most, or the thing that gives me the strongest reaction. There will probably be people who would discredit this standpoint of choosing … Continue reading REVIEW: The Red Balloon | Black Swan State Theatre Company

Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward | Black Swan State Theatre Company Heath Ledger Theatre Reviewed Saturday 25 July, 2015   Black Swan Associate Director Jeffrey Jay Fowler is making his main stage directorial debut with Noel Coward’s WWII-era comedy Blithe Spirit. It’s a different choice for Fowler, who is best known for writing and devising his own new works, rather than blowing the dust off of old classics. However it’s probably a good exercise as part of his career trajectory to take on a popular English drawing-room comedy from yesteryear. It certainly fits into Black Swan’s unspoken mission to keep … Continue reading REVIEW: Blithe Spirit | Black Swan State Theatre Company

REVIEW: Glengarry Glen Ross | BSSTC

Reviewed May 27, 2015 Heath Ledger Theatre “All my thoughts were on them, none on me,” says Shelley Levene, as he’s describing his “sit” with the Nyborgs.  This is, in fact, a prime example of a funny thing that Mamet does when he’s writing his scripts – he embeds his acting philosophy in his characters’ words. There are other hints of it here and there scattered throughout Glengarry Glen Ross: “Where is the moment?” and “Never open your mouth until you know what the shot is,” are both two other tidbits of acting advice Mamet gives us. Whether these hints are intentional … Continue reading REVIEW: Glengarry Glen Ross | BSSTC

REVIEW: Shrine | BSSTC

Tim Winton’s Shrine is beautifully flawed; somehow, structurally, its scope seems beyond the confines of theatre and it might seem a better fit for film, or be best savored from the page. But then, once the play finishes, it’s obvious from the sense of communal catharsis why the work does exist for theatre. There are moments of impact that are best felt live, and are so powerful the wave of their energy surges through the entire room, right up to the circle. The language is wonderful; the conversations have a natural ease while still maintaining elegance and intelligence, and the frequently descriptive dialogue … Continue reading REVIEW: Shrine | BSSTC
