Here at Perth Arts Live, we know festival season in Perth/Boorloo (and beyond!) is hectic. There’s a lot to do, see, and plan when arts festivals overlap in such spectacular ways. To help readers make informed decisions about where to spend every moment of their free time during this culture-crammed season just like us, we’re asking The Blue Room Theatre Summer Nights artists to ‘take five’ from their busy schedules to answer five questions about their shows. No rest for the weary, eh?

Actor, writer, and director Pigtails (Mia Slayford) takes five with us to talk about Broken Toy, a pop music dance theatre ‘collision’ presented by  The Blue Room Theatre for Summer Nights, running from 11 – 15 Feb. About Broken Toy:

“‘Pigtails’ doesn’t feel connected to Planet Earth. She’s always felt different to everyone else around her, she’s complex, ridiculously sensitive and moves through the world with her 8-year-old self in mind. The big feelings just keep getting bigger so rightfully she’s turned to pop music to process it all. Trauma response? maybe. But there’s a bigger picture here that she’s still trying to work out. This show is designed for humans who find human-ing difficult. Maybe she’s a bit broken or maybe she’s just as she should be?”

Q1 What inspired the show, and what was the motivation for bringing it to The Blue Room Theatre for Summer Nights?

Being a human in the world right now is a lot and so it only made sense to write this show! I used to come watch shows at The Blue Room Theatre when I was a teen. Feels full circle 🙂

Q2 What’s the most unexpected, funny, or interesting thing that has happened during the show’s development?

I purchased 4 fluffy toy dogs online for my dancers to use in the show and apparently you’re supposed to check the dimensions? Turns out they’re actually mini figurines the size of my hand. Ha! They still made show cause they’re sensational. You’ll have to come and see them if nothing else.

Q3 What does the audience absolutely need to know before they come to see the show? (without spoilers, of course!)

Come alone, come with friends, bring your mum. If you feel weird, stuck or misunderstood, this show is high on the validation and big on the feelings.

Q4 If you could invite any famous person (living or dead) to the show, who would it be and why?

Liza Minnelli, cause I just feel she’d get it.

Q5 What other show(s) would pair well with yours for a delicious summer festival feast?

A Third Place! Wogs unite, what can I say?

BONUS ROUND: In 10 words or less, give us your last ditch pitch to get folks in to see the show!
