Not long after Perth Theatre Company announced the cancellation of the rest of their 2015 season comes the news of the imminent departure of Artistic Director/CEO Melissa Cantwell and Executive Producer Georgia Malone from the company as of August 28.

PTC has released the following statements:

“Perth Theatre Company recognises the achievements of Melissa Cantwell as she leaves the company to explore a new venture.

Dr. Saliba Sassine recognised Melissa’s contribution: ‘Melissa’s energy and enthusiasm is infections. Her commitment to the organisation and to the arts sector of Western Australia has been exceptional and it is with great reluctance that we bid her adieu. Melissa will always be part of the PTC family.’

While her new plans are currently under wraps, Melissa wanted to thank PTC audiences and the artistic community, ‘During my 7 years at the helm of PTC I have had the privilege of working with some outstandingly talented artists, and I am proud of what I, together with them, have been able to achieve. Working alongside Georgia Malone and the remarkable team we assembled at PTC has been a particular highlight. I would like to share my deepest thanks to them, to the PTC board and the artistic community of Western Australia for their unwavering support. I’m excited by the future and look forward to seeing Perth Theatre Company’s progress as a keen advocate.’

Long time collaborator and PTC Executive Producer, Georgia Malone, will join Melissa in departing the company on August 28. Perth Theatre Company is now entering a period of planning to assess the current strategy and structure of the company. The board has invited Melissa and Georgia to contribute to this new phase and assist the Company as it moves into its 31st year in 2016.”

Farewell to Melissa Cantwell and Georgia Malone, and here’s hoping PTC can make a quick recovery from its recent difficulties. It would be a shame to lose such an institution.
